Changing pre-configs on the lab

A well known rule for taking a CCIE lab is to not change any pre-configs. I wanted to get feedback from people regarding this matter which  has me a bit confused.

Lets say that the pre-configs for the network have some config already placed on the RR of the network. However, I want use peer-group, or policy/session templates on the RR so that I can make the config modular and easier for me to work with during the lab.

Would you consider changing the RR config to use peer-groups or session/policy templates "changing pre-configs"?

I personally don't think that it would be an issue, but then again if I was 100% sure then I would not be asking =)

Maybe what they mean is to not change hostname, passwords, vty settings, FR switch configs, etc.

Thanks for your feedback
