QoS child policy-map vs parent policy-map

Guys,

I have read and implemented QoS for some couple of times now but the area that still gives me some issues is the concept of this child policy-map verse parent policy-map.

If someone can explain what the concept is all about in a simple english and sentence possibly it can do the magic of clearing this concept for me once and for all.
