Hi,
I am a little confused when the Next Hop IP, vs the Exit Interface, vs Both should be used when doing static routing.
It seems from my understanding that it would be best pracitce to always use both the Exit Interace and the Next Hop IP. I understand that when you use just the Exit Interface, you can run into ARP issues on NON-P2P links and even NHRP issues on DMVPN Hub links, but you gain the benefit of having the static route removed from the RIB if the line protocol of the interface goes down.
On the other hand, if you use just the Next Hop IP (which is how I have always done static routing the real world) then you dont have any ARP or DMVPN Hub issues, but if the route is always in the RIB.
So it would seem to me that it would be best to "Always" use the combination of both the exit interface and the next hop IP to gain the functionality of removing the route from the RIB if the interface goes down but not having any ARP issues and/or DMVPN Hub issues.
Would greatly appreciate it if anyone could share some insight.
Thanks,
