How I solved 1.1 - Step-by-step guide

We all know the pain. We are just starting on our CCIE path and *wham* we can't make out the diagrams.

The end game?

SW1 VLANs = 7, 58, 67, 79, 146

SW2 VLANs = 8, 22, 43, 58

SW3 VLANs = 5, 9, 43, 79

SW4 VLANs = 10, 146

How do we get there?

For starters the logical topology gives you some of the VLANs:

SW1 = 7, 67, 79

SW2 = 8, 58

SW3 = 9, 79

SW4 = 10

How do we get the other VLANs?

We look at the routers on the logical topology and see which physical interfaces belong to VLANs. We then check the physical topology to see which switch that interface is connected to and add that VLAN plus configure the appropriate interface on the switch.

For R1 we can see that it is connected to VLAN 146 via Fa0/0. Now check the physical topology and see which switch the interface connects to which is SW1 Fa0/1. We must therefore configure VLAN 146 on SW1 and make Fa0/1 be an access port in VLAN 146.

We now have:

SW1 = 7, 67, 79, 146

SW2 = 8, 58

SW3 = 9, 79

SW4 = 10

For R2 we can see that it is connected to VLAN 22 via Fa0/0. Now check the physical topology and see which switch the interface connects to which is SW2 Fa0/2. We must therefore configure VLAN 22 on SW2 and make Fa0/2 be an access port in VLAN 22.

We now have:

SW1 = 7, 67, 79, 146

SW2 = 8, 22, 58

SW3 = 9, 79

SW4 = 10

For R3 we can see that it is not part of any VLAN.

For R4 we can see that it is connected to VLAN 43 via Fa0/0and VLAN 146 via Fa0/1. Now check the physical topology and see which switch Fa0/0 connects to which is SW2 Fa0/4. We must therefore configure VLAN 43 on SW2 and make Fa0/4 be an access port in VLAN 43. Now check the physical topology and see which switch Fa0/1 connects to which is SW4 Fa0/4. We must therefore configure VLAN 146 on SW4 and make Fa0/4 be an access port in VLAN 146.

We now have:

SW1 = 7, 67, 79, 146

SW2 = 8, 22, 43, 58

SW3 = 9, 79

SW4 = 10, 146

For R5 we can see that it is connected to VLAN 58 via Fa0/0and VLAN 5 via Fa0/1. Now check the physical topology and see which switch Fa0/0 connects to which is SW1 Fa0/5. We must therefore configure VLAN 58 on SW1 and make Fa0/5 be an access port in VLAN 58. Now check the physical topology and see which switch Fa0/1 connects to which is SW3 Fa0/5. We must therefore configure VLAN 5 on SW3 and make Fa0/5 be an access port in VLAN 5.

 

We now have:

SW1 = 7, 58, 67, 79, 146

SW2 = 8, 22, 43, 58

SW3 = 5, 9, 79

SW4 = 10, 146

For R6 we are told not to worry about the connections.

For BB1 we can see there it is not part of any VLAN.

For BB2 we can see that it is connected to VLAN 22 via its Ethernet interface. Now check the physical topology and see which switch the Ethernet interface connects to which is SW2 Fa0/24. We already know that VLAN 22 needs to be configured on SW2 but we must configure Fa0/24 on SW2 to be an access port in VLAN 22.

For BB3 we can see that is connected to VLAN 43 via its Ethernet interface. Now check the physical topology and see which switch the Ethernet interface connects to which is SW3 Fa0/24. We must therefore configure VLAN 43 on SW3 and make Fa0/24 be an access port in VLAN 43.

We now have a completed VLAN list:

SW1 = 7, 58, 67, 79, 146

SW2 = 8, 22, 43, 58

SW3 = 5, 9, 43, 79

SW4 = 10, 146 

 

It took me ages to work this out but it really ought to be straightforward. Now I've written it out it makes perfect sense and hopefully does for you too.
